Chanukah
(John 10:22-24) At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem; it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple area, in the portico of Solomon. The Jews then surrounded Him and began saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”
It was winter and Jesus was at the Jerusalem Temple for a feast. What feast was it? December is in the winter and the Hebrew word for "dedication" is "CHANUKAH." This means you can translate the verse saying,
"At the time the Feast of Chanukah took place in Jerusalem."
During the feast of Chanukah, we celebrate the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. It was in ruins and the people of Israel (especially the Maccabees) had to clean up the mess, restore the furniture to worship God, and rededicate it to begin worshipping God once again as taught in God's Torah. Now you see what the feast of Chanukah is about, so I need to ask you,
"How does this apply to me?
What should I do about the feast of Chanukah?
(1 Corinthians 3:16-17) Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20) Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought for a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
Paul clearly teaches us that we who trusted in Jesus (and are now His bride) are temples of God. This means we can take advantage of this gift from God (Chanukah) and rededicate our temples to God.
We see that Jesus was at the Temple during the feast of Chanukah so He must see some value and purpose in celebrating Chanukah. If Jesus celebrated Chanukah, you can too.
